Mind your tongue!

“A rebel shouts in anger; a wise man holds his temper in and cools it.”
(TLB) Prov 29:11
“A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back.”
(NKJ) Prov 29:11

A wise man will pay close attention to what proceeds from his mouth. While the mouth has exalted some of the greatest of kingdoms and individuals, it has pulled down others. In his letter to the Jews, James wrote, “So also the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. Sometimes it praises our heavenly Father, and sometimes it breaks out into curses against men who are made like God.” (James 3:5,9) The mouth is indeed powerful. Consider that:
-    Juries take decisions based on what the witnesses say – a wrongly spoken word may condemn the innocent!
-    Doctors make diagnosis and prescriptions based on what patients say – incorrect complaints will lead to inaccurate treatment!
-    Vows are made or broken by words of mouth – relationships are destroyed, hearts are broken and destinies destroyed by words out of season!

Now, who is in control - you or your mouth? The bible states, “The godly think before speaking...” (Proverbs 15:28)
I am reminded of the man Moses. Though notable as the meekest of all men, and through whom God wrought mighty miracles, particularly overthrowing Pharaoh and Egypt, he was denied entrance to the Promised Land because he allowed his temper to get into his mouth! In similar ways many have lost out on many blessings in life, physical or spiritual, just because they did not keep their mouths shut at the point of frustration, anger or disappointment. It was Thomas Fuller, who said, “When the heart is afire, some sparks will fly out of the mouth.” The truth is, anger and frustrations may come but your reaction will rule your life. Kenneth Copeland said, “One of the things that you and I have to learn if we want to be faithful servants in the kingdom of God is how to keep our mouths shut!”
In other words;
- When frustrated, keep your mouth shut. Open only in prayer!
- When discouraged, keep your mouth shut. Open only in praise and thanksgiving!
-    When aggravated, keep your mouth shut. Open only in gentle speech!
-    When desperate, keep your mouth shut. Open only to utter a well- thought-out decision!
-    When cheated and persecuted, keep your mouth shut. Open only in prayer. This was the beginning of Joseph’s walk towards enthronement!
Profitable pacts have been made, homes and marriages restored, lost children found, businesses resuscitated and nations turned around by the right use of the mouth. As a matter of fact, in the Old Testament, God commanded the priests to bless the people by making pronouncements (words of mouth). And in the New Testament, we are told that with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. In other words, our salvation (deliverance, breakthrough, healing) is tied to our words. Once you learn when to be quiet and when to speak, you’ll discover your victory is within reach – in your mouth!
In conclusion, don’t make haste to bare your mind on any issue particularly when it is not in your favour. Let the Holy Spirit take the lead (in other words, enlist the help of the Holy Spirit). Then your words will be seasoned with salt. They will edify man and they will bless God. Your tests will come out as testimonies, and your trials as triumphs.
